Health Insurance for Solo Entrepreneurs

By Monikah J. Ogando

One of the most important benefits employed people enjoy is health insurance coverage. It is also the single most costly expense for self-employed entrepreneurs. So what can you do to reduce ever increasing costs of health care coverage? Here are a few tips.

1. If a medical bill seems excessive, try negotiating

Your doctor or the office manager who handles billing will probably be flexible, provided you make a valid case. When one woman in Texas was charged $900 for surgery and “consultation,” she explained that she had visited the hospital just once, for surgery; her bill was promptly cut by $370.

2.. Contact a medical bill “auditor”

Several services have a medical bill “auditing” system that evaluates your medical bills to determine if errors occurred in the billing process. Considering that 97 percent of hospital medical bills contain errors, it’s no wonder why out-of-pocket medical expenses are on the rise for consumers. Because the typical hospital bill is extremely complicated, often containing several hundred line-item charges, there is ample opportunity for computer mistakes and accidental human error. Do a Google search for medical bill auditors to find companies offering this service.

3. You may get a tax break on your medical bills

Keep all your medical bills together and add them up at tax time. If they exceed 7.5 percent of your adjusted gross income, you may deduct the excess. Please note that these items also may be included in the total: the cost of eye glasses, contact lenses, physical therapy, x-rays, hearing aids, psychiatric care, insurance and transportation to the hospital or doctor’s office (at 30 cents a mile). There are phase-outs in some cases based on adjusted gross income. Check with your professional tax adviser.

4. Deduct 100% of your healthcare costs from your taxes

The IRS allows all self-employed to deduct 100% of health care costs from their taxes by using Section 105 of the Internal Revenue Code. To receive this deduction, you must do the following:

a) Hire your spouse as an employee of your business.

b) Have your spouse receive health insurance in his or her name, and include the family on the policy.

c) Pay your spouse a salary that will cover the costs of the insurance.

d) Talk to your tax professional about planning for Section 105 on your taxes.

We all know your spouse is active in your business. Now, you can equally recognize their contribution he or she makes – and get Uncle Sam to give you a tax break.

5. Help for families with kids -- CHIP

All states have established new programs that help lower income families with children to pay for health insurance for their kids. Financed partly by the federal government, the Children’s Health Insurance Programs (CHIP) operate either as an expansion of the state’s Medicaid program or a subsidy for basic private health insurance. Eligible families may be able to access coverage for their children at greatly reduced premiums which will vary depending upon family income. Contact your state Department of Health or Insurance for more information.

6. Shop around

Hospital costs vary widely, especially between urban and rural facilities. If your doctor has admitting privileges at more than one hospital, find out if you can be admitted to the one that’s less expensive. Keep in mind that hospitals operated by non-profit foundations are usually less expensive than investor-owned, for profit hospitals. To find out how much your local hospitals charge, ask your doctor. Many states have Health Services Cost Review Commissions, which compile such data.

7. Check for free clinics in your community

You and your entire family can save hundreds of dollars by taking advantage of the many free screenings, immunizations, and other health clinics offered by your local community or a town near you. Numerous community hospitals and social services can provide blood pressure checks, shots for your children, free contraceptives and/or advice, and other preventative health care at little to no cost.

8. Get a second opinion out of town

Believe it or not, your chance of undergoing an expensive surgery or preventative procedure may depend solely on where you happen to live. Statistics show that the frequency in which certain medical procedures are performed varies widely from location to location. For example, residents of New Haven, Conn., are twice as likely to undergo a coronary bypass operation as residents of Boston, Mass. What’s the reason for this discrepancy? One Dartmouth Medical School expert, John E. Wennberg, M.D., M.H.P., explains that certain operations are simply more fashionable in some parts of the United States than others. So, if you plan to get a second opinion prior to surgery, consider going to a specialist in another city. In addition, try to find out what the surgery rates for your procedure are in different cities. HealthAllies.com also offers this service online at www.healthallies.com. To get the names of second-opinion doctors in your region, call the U.S. government’s toll-free second-opinion hotline at 1-800-638-6833.

9. Don’t pay double for a second opinion

As you make arrangements for a second opinion, ask your doctor to send copies of your medical records, x-rays, and lab tests to the second-opinion doctor. These tests don’t need duplication; your second doctor will have the information he or she needs – and you don’t pay double.

10. Emotional stability

Your mental health is equally important as your physical health. Do you have blue days once in awhile, or struggle with gray winters? St. John’s Wort, an over-the-counter herbal supplement, has been proven to increase positive moods. Before rushing to your family physician for medication to make you feel better, try supplements with a combination of expressing your feelings with friends and a healthy lifestyle. Mood stabilizers are some of the most costly medications on the market today. However, you should be aware of the signs of stress or even depression. Give yourself a simple screening test:

* Do you have feelings of sadness and/or irritability?
* Has there been a loss of interest in pleasure activities you once enjoyed?
* Have there been changes in your weight or appetite?
* Have you noticed changes in your sleeping pattern?
* Are you feeling guilty?
* Do you have the inability to concentrate, remember things or make decisions?
* Are you fatigued or have a loss of energy?
* Do you experience restlessness or decreased activity noticed by others?
* Do you have feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness?
* Do you have thoughts of suicide or death?

If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, consider consulting your family physician. If they recommend mental health treatment, it is more cost-effective to have your family physician prescribe mood stabilizers instead of seeing a psychiatrist. However, follow your doctor’s instructions on counseling and referrals to mental health professionals.

11. Order your prescription drugs by phone, web or mail

There are many discount prescription drug benefits available for a modest cost. Communicating for Agriculture and the Self-Employed offers a free prescription card through PCS. This program saves its members up to 40 percent at over 55,000 pharmacies nationwide. On average, CA members save $9.39 per prescription order. You can enroll free on their Web site at www.selfemployedcountry.org.

12. Ask your doctor to prescribe generic drugs

Medicine marketed under its scientific name is usually 50 percent cheaper and just as effective as brand-name versions. In addition, look for generic drugs in the medicine you purchase over the counter. For example, 100 generic aspirin may cost $1.79; the same ingredients packaged under a well-known brand name can cost more than $5 for 100 tablets. Consider, also, just how important the new easy-to-swallow products are to your comfort. The lesser price of some medicines may be comparably easier to swallow when thinking about your budget.

13. Get enrolled in a group plan

For self employed people including those involved in small businesses, individual health insurance can be extremely costly – sometimes as much as 30 percent of your take home pay. By joining associations like National Association for the Self Employed (www.nase.org), you have the opportunity to enroll in a group insurance plan with unique built-in cost controls.

14. Choose a higher deductible

Often for the healthy family, the number of visits to the doctor totals less than $250 a year, a normally low deductible rate. This low deduction rate, however, can end up costing you more in the form of higher premiums. If your family has enjoyed good health for a number of years, you may want to switch to a higher deductible of $500 or $1000. You’ll notice greatly reduced premiums.

15. Pay premiums annually

You avoid the service fee and may also receive a discount from your insurance carrier. Check with your insurance agent about how much money you can save if you pay your premium one time during the year.

16. Make sure there’s a ceiling for out-of-pocket expenses for catastrophic illnesses

About half of individual policyholders lack this important provision, according to insurance experts, who recommend a major medical policy with a stop-loss clause limiting policyholder payout to $2,000 or $3,000.

17. Get educated about your health

Invest in your health by becoming information-rich. Read publications about health care. Pay special attention to free wellness publications like Inside Mayo Clinic at www.mayo.edu/healthinfo/public.html or have on hand a book on medical self-care, like The AAFP Family Health and Medical Guide and The Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy. A wealth of information is also available on the Internet.

18. Take advantage of free health advice

For free information booklets from the U.S. government about nearly every health care topic you can imagine, simply write to the Consumer Information Center in Pueblo, Colorado. The government offers several dozen booklets on topics ranging from nutrition, medical problems, mental health, to drugs, exercise and weight control. To receive a catalog explaining these booklets, write to:

Consumer Information Center

PO Box 100

Pueblo, CO 81009

www.pueblo.gsa.gov (you can download booklets from this site)

Once again the U.S. Government comes through by providing a number of toll free health care information phone services. Topics are numerous, including hearing aids, cancer information, Alzheimer’s disease, drugs and pregnancy issues. For information on the health topics and phone numbers, call the National Health Information Center at 1-800-336-4797.

19. Brush up on first-aid skills and become CPR certified.

Proper treatment of various accidents may reduce the number of visits to the doctor, and can save lives in an emergency. It’s important to always keep an updated medical kit in your home or office.

Here are the basics for your first-aid kit:

* bandage supplies, including a roll of 3 inch wide gauze, individually packaged 4 inch sterile gauze pads, a roll of 1 inch bandage tape, butterfly bandage tape, and scissors
* elastic bandages
* cotton swabs
* sterile dressings or towels
* pain reliever (acetaminophen or ibuprofen)
* anti-inflammatory medicine (ibuprofen)
* ipecac syrup (for use on advice of medical professional to induce vomiting)
* tweezers
* hydrogen peroxide
* skin creams, including hydrocortisone cream, calamine lotion and antibiotic creams
* an antihistamine (diphenhydramine for allergic reactions)
* flashlight
* eye patch
* arm sling
* tongue depressors (to be used as a finger splint)
* ice pack
* re-hydration fluids (such as Pedialyte or Infalyte)

20. Take a lifestyle approach to wellness – every day

Take charge of your health by making simple changes in your lifestyle. By following these seven basic rules of good health, you’ll improve your chances of living a long, healthy, active life.

* Get eight hours of sleep per night.
* Eat breakfast every morning.
* Cut down on snacks between meals.
* Keep within 10 pounds of your recommended weight range. If you’re unsure what your weight range should be check with your doctor.
* Exercise aerobically for at least 30 minutes three times per week.
* Don’t smoke.
* Don’t drink more than two alcoholic beverages per day.
* Take recommended dosages of vitamins and supplements.

Self Health Insurance - Is It Relevant?

By Kaushik Adhikary

According to 2007 Employer Health Benefits Survey released recently by the Kaiser Family Foundation and Health Research and Educational Trust, the annual family health insurance premiums now stand at average $12,106. Premiums for employer sponsored health insurance have come down to 6.1% in 2007 as compared to 7.7% reported increase in 2006, but still higher than the increase in worker's wages (3.7%) or the overall inflation rate (2.6%).

Its a fact that advances in medicine and medical technology have made medical treatment more expensive and people in developed countries are living longer. A large group of senior citizens are coming up steadily requiring more medical care than younger generation.

These factors cause an increase in the cost of health insurance including increase in Social Security cost in the U.S. Its evident that unhealthy food habits, insufficient exercise, obesity, street drugs, excessive intake of alcohol, smoking, inadequate health-care professionals in rural areas have added fuel in increasing health insurance cost.

The only alternative, however in bring down the health insurance cost is to do the opposites with regular exercising, intaking healthy food or avoiding junk food, avoiding addictive, checking alcohol & smoking etc. A healthier lifestyle can protect you from most of the diseases and give you some relief in lowering the increasing cost of health-care.

An idea of Consumer Driven Health-care Plan encourages you (the Americans) to go for buying high-deductible lower-premium insurance option for getting tax benefits and taking advantage of Health Incentive Account (HIA) you can manage things nice that means if you have dollars in your HIA, you can utilize them to offset some of your out-of-pocket expenses.

Now,what does Consumer Driven Health Care (CDHC) mean? Well, by adapting to CDHC you are allowed to participate into health insurance plans through Health Savings Accounts(HSAs), Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRAs) or similar plans to pay routine health-care expenses. While high-deductible health insurance policy protects you from catastrophic medical expenses. After-all self health insurance is not a bad idea.

High-deductible health insurance policy is cheaper than the low-deductible one, but you have to have enough savings to deal with the small expenses up to the deductible amount. Now,why HSA? Because its a tax-advantaged medical savings account available in the U.S. who opts for HDHP.

If you utilize the fund to pay for qualified medical expenses, you are exempted from tax liability. But non-medical expenses are subject to IRA guide-lines. Whereas HRAs are partially self-funded medical insurance plans with special tax advantages. In partial self-funded program,your employer pays a predetermined portion of medical claim with a cap or limit.

And whenever this cap is reached, the plan pays an amount equal to its portion of co-insurance (co-insurer means where more than one insurers participate in the same subject matter of insurance) and continues to pay until the out-of-pocket maximum or stop-loss amount and then after pays 100% of medical claims.

Divine Love And Lights Meditation Technique

By Jethro Jiang

Meditation improves concentration, increase self-awareness and help us to overcome stress as well as helps us to get along better with others. Meditation is also used to improve physical and mental well being. Some have been able to overcome depression or drug/alcohol addiction with meditations.

I have been practicing and teaching meditation since 2001, relatively new to "old school" meditation standard (which need over 10 years to master), but Divine Love & Lights Meditation Technique has changed my life, and the lives of my family, in a profound positive way.

I believe that this Meditation Technique can do the same for everyone who learns the basic skills. For those of you who has learned or practiced any other meditation technique, this will bring you to another level. Divine Love & Lights Healing Meditation will empower you without any rules or ritual that you associated with the old school meditation technique. This is much easier and much more effective and enjoyable to practice.

The beginners need not to worry about this technique, as it is so easy to practice and to master. It's not about sitting in a very strenuous position, or mumbling a strange words (although you are more than welcome to do so J ). The Divine Love & Lights Healing Meditation is so simple. All you need to do is take a comfortable position, then you're set to go.

After getting an attunement from a Master, You can start practicing right away. All you need to do is spare 10 minutes of your time to do Self Healing by putting both hands on your upper chest area and say: Divine Love & Lights ON!

Yes, 10 minutes a day is all you need to spend for self healing (if you do not have a health problem). Compare this to Reiki where you need to spend at least 60 minutes to do self healing. This much shorter period was made possible because by doing Divine Love & Lights Technique, You access higher vibration of the Divine Energy. The Divine Energy is the purest and the best Energy for Healings as well as for Spiritual growth.

Divine Love & Lights Technique will also bring You in a "deepest meditation state" faster than any other technique. Meditating has never been this easy and fun before.

Health in the Self

By Dorothy M. Neddermeyer, PhD Platinum Quality Author

What is health?

Is health the absence of disease? Is health a birth right or simply luck? According to Ayuveda, India's ancient art of healing, the meaning of health is a single word: Swastha. Swa = self + Stha = established. Thus a person is healthy when '"established in the self." Immunity is much more than T-cells, B-cells and antibodies. Health depends upon a well-integrated core of identity. Thus, health is a birth right.

The Self as defined by Ayuveda is not identical to the western concept of ego. It is the power of individual identity that fosters one to have an existence apparently separate from all other beings. In Sanskrit this is called Ahamkara - literally, the "I-former." You are you and not he, she, we or they because of Ahamkara. It is the creative power that gives you your sense of "I am." Ahamkara consistently identifies with an individual body, mind, and spirit enabling them to exist together as a living being. It is the center of your awareness and from it come feelings of my: my body, my emotions, my thoughts, my personality, etc. Where there is my, there is I.

Each of the millions and millions of cells that make up you has a center of awareness. Ahamkara is that center. How well your self identifies with these cells determines your resistance to disease. Just as a strong central government protects its citizens, so too a strong central identity protects the body. Because the body and mind are intimately connected, (contrary to western thought) your self-esteem is your cells' self-esteem. Without sufficient self-esteem and self-love the cells become more vulnerable to the harmful effects of stress.

Stress

Stress is an insidious precursor to disease. In simple terms, stress occurs every time you adapt to a new situation. Consequently, every time your environment changes you must create a new equilibrium with it to stay healthy. 'Environment' includes not only your physical space, but also your mental, emotional, social, and spiritual surroundings. Only by being centered and stable in your self can you have the adaptability to roll with life's punches and face the innumerable challenges to your well-being.

It can be said, you have a body self, mind self, and spirit self. Health requires establishment in each of these selves. You need to have a sound mind, in a sound body and a healthy relationship with Universal Spirit. Vertically body, mind and spirit needs to flow in dynamic interplay. Horizontally you need to have a harmonious relationship with your family and society and your self needs to remember its debt to the one who created it.

Our Being

Health as defined by Ayurveda is not the mere absence of disease. Swastha is a positive state of multi-layered well-being. Each level of our being affects and reflects the others. A happy, contented mind projects health into the body. Love, trust, and compassion needs to be developed if you are to be healthy. Modern neuropsychiatry has discovered specific neuropeptides associated with joy and happiness that communicate with the body's trillions of cells. Likewise, the health of mind and emotions depend upon bodily health. Physical toxins and poor digestion impair mental digestion creating mental toxins like fear, anger, greed, attachment, envy, and judgment. The old saying 'the body is a temple of the spirit' is a factual reality. A firm (as in healthy) body 'firms-up' ahamkara and she reciprocated by projecting health into it.

Establishing one self into one's self is not an egotistical attempt to become bigger, better, or more important. Over investment in self is as dangerous as its opposite. Selfishness can only lead us further away from each other and our source in Spirit. Without empathy and compassion for all other living beings, we become destructive to them and ourselves. Invest in your self so that your health and harmony act as a harmonizing influence on those around you and contributes to the health of your environment. This is Swastha.

Spirituality; Does Healing Really Help?

By Nick Arrizza, M.D. Platinum Quality Author

When was the last time you went to a healer? Under that definition I would also include your healthcare practitioner because they too are involved in the same mind set.

What mind set is that you ask?

Well it is the mind set that you can only get better if you accept their prescription for health, whatever that may be.

So my question to you is this: How do you feel knowing that you need someone else to tell you what is wrong with your mind/body and then imply that you do not have sufficient control over its healthy functioning?

I know this question may sound a bit odd to you because you may be in the habit of giving responsibility for your mind/body to others around you. I would even guess that the thought of taking full responsibility for it might feel like a daunting task that you would rather not undertake.

Yes, some might "think" that it is better to give that responsibility to someone else.

My question is then: What is the consequence to you of giving up this responsibility?

Well let’s look at it.

Doesn't it make you feel dependent, vulnerable, out of control of your mind/body, anxious, stressed, unsure if others are acting in your best interests, unsure whether others really know what is good for you, helpless, like a victim, and trapped in a "vehicle" without the owners manual to name a few.

You see all of this is undermining your health isn't it?

So what does it mean to take responsibility for one's mind/body?

Well not what you "think"!

Did you know for instance that there is already a Divine Field of Energy that is You in and around You that already knows everything about how your mind/body is supposed to function?

Did you know all you have to do is to begin to recognize this and allow it to be in charge of your mind/body for it to function properly?

Did you know that this field of energy is activated when you are being honest with yourself and fails to function when you are being dishonest with yourself about who you are and what you are capable of?

When activated it works spontaneously and automatically without any other effort required from you.

So here's what it means to be responsible for one's mind/body. It means being "honest" about who you are and what you are capable of.

That is you are a Divine Being and you have immense creative potential.

Yes, I know that that likely challenges your beliefs about yourself. Therein lies the problem: the sum total of all the beliefs that you’ve acquired throughout your life that are lying to you about who you are.

Notice however whether somewhere deep inside the statement about your Divinity resonates at some deep level. If so, notice where that resonance resides within you and sit with it for a moment. Visualize what ever it looks like to you. See it expand and grow until it fills your entire being.

Do you like how this feels?

If you read my other articles here in this ezine you will find ways to help you reconnect to this personal honesty, reclaim full control of your life and allow your Divine Self to shine through.
